How to Locate Log Files of QODBC Desktop, Online, and POS for Troubleshooting

Note: The QODBC message, SDK message, and Detail Trace Log file could help quickly locate the issue with QODBC itself. Below is an instruction on how to locate them for troubleshooting.

Clear All Messages Before Troubleshooting

Follow these steps to clear existing logs, enable full detail trace logging, replicate the issue, and extract the diagnostic log files.

The following steps are applicable for QODBC Desktop, QODBC Online, and QODBC POS.

Step 1: Close Applications & Clear Previous Logs

If the application remains open, QODBC may be unable to clear existing log files or record new entries in the detailed trace log.

To prevent log file locking and ensure clean diagnostic data, clear out old logs before starting your troubleshooting session.

  1. Close all applications currently connected to QODBC (e.g., MS Access, Excel, QuickBooks, SQL Server, custom applications, or the QODBC Test Tool).

  2. Open the QODBC Setup Screen:

    • Go to Start > All Programs (or Search) > QODBC Driver for QuickBooks > Configure 32-Bit QODBC Driver or Configure 64-Bit QODBC Driver.

  3. Navigate to the Messages tab.

  4. (Optional) Click Review QODBC Messages or Review Trace Log if you need to save past logs before clearing.

  5. Click Clear QODBC Messages and Clear Trace Log.

For QODBC Online, open "Configure 32-Bit QODBC Online Driver" or "Configure 64-Bit QODBC Online Driver"

For QODBC POS, open Configure 32-Bit QODBC POS Driver

Step 2: Enable Detail Trace Logging & XML Options

  • On the QODBC Setup Screen, select the System DSN tab.

  • Select your Data Source (e.g., QuickBooks Data) and click Configure.

  • Navigate to the Messages tab and clear existing logs.

  • Enable/check Detail Tracing (Slow).

  • Switch to the Advanced tab and check Add XML to Detail Trace Log.

  • Click Apply and then OK.

  • Re-confirm all connected applications remain closed so QODBC can initialize the new trace settings upon the next connection.

Step 3: Reproduce the Issue & Capture Error Details

  1. Open your application or QODBC Test Tool and connect again.

  2. Re-run the exact operation or query that caused the failure.

  3. As soon as the error occurs, take a screenshot of the error message box.

  4. Return to the QODBC Setup Screen > Messages tab and export/save the logs using the following buttons:

    • Review QODBC Messages (Save as a text file, e.g., QODBC_Messages.txt)

    • Review SDK Messages (Save as a text file, e.g., SDK_Messages.txt)

    • Review Trace Log (Save as a text file, e.g., Trace_Log.txt)

  5. Uncheck Detail Tracing (Slow) on the Messages tab to restore normal query performance and prevent high disk space usage.

Note: Detail Tracing (Slow) creates a trace log of exactly what QODBC is doing in the background with the application and is used for debugging purposes. Ensure the log is turned off when not needed, as these can use up large amounts of disk space.
