[QODBC Desktop] Understanding Unoptimized (Red) Tables in the QODBC Support Wizard

Problem Description:

When using the QODBC Support Wizard, some tables may appear in red text with a label indicating they are "unoptimized." Users may wonder why these tables cannot be optimized - even after running the Fix or Optimize Selected Tables buttons.

Affected products: QODBC Desktop
Expected outcome: Red (unoptimized) tables are typically empty - they contain no data and therefore do not need optimization. This is expected behavior, not an error.

Symptoms:

  • The QODBC Support Wizard displays a list of tables with some highlighted in red, labeled as "unoptimized."
  • Running the Fix button completes successfully, but the same tables remain red.
  • Running Optimize Selected Tables also leaves the red tables unchanged.
  • The Fix operation may take an extended time (12+ hours for large company files) to complete.

Cause:

Tables that contain no data are not optimized by QODBC. When a table has zero records, the QODBC optimizer skips it entirely - there is nothing to index or compress. In the Support Wizard UI, these skipped tables are displayed in red to indicate their unoptimized status.

This behavior is intentional and correct. It is not a bug or a sign of a corrupted optimizer. Empty tables do not benefit from optimization because there is no data to optimize.

Resolution:

  1. Review the list of red (unoptimized) tables. Identify which tables are shown in red in the QODBC Support Wizard.
  2. Determine whether each table is in use. Check your QuickBooks company file to see if you have ever recorded data in these tables (e.g., PayrollItem, SalesTaxItem, etc.).
  3. If the table is not in use: You can safely ignore red tables. They contain no data and do not impact query performance.
  4. If the table is in use but still shows red: Verify that you have actually recorded records in that table within QuickBooks. If records exist and the table remains red after running Fix/Optimize, contact QODBC Support for further analysis.

Example Scenarios:

Scenario 1 - Ignore unused tables:

A user runs the QODBC Support Wizard and sees five tables in red: PayrollItemDetail, SalesTaxRate, ServiceTerritory, TaxCode, and TaxRate. After checking their QuickBooks file, they confirm these tables have never been used (no payroll items, no sales tax codes set up). These red tables can be safely ignored.

Scenario 2 - Verify table usage:

A user notices the Employee table is unoptimized (red) and suspects something is wrong. After checking QuickBooks, they confirm they do have employees recorded. They clear their trace logs, run the Fix button again, and re-examine the trace log. If the Employee table still appears red in the log with a "no data to optimize" message, this may indicate a deeper issue - they should contact QODBC Support with the trace log.

Additional Notes:

  • The Fix button performs a broad optimization of all tables that have data. For large company files, this can take an extended time (several hours or more depending on data volume).
  • Optimize Selected Tables lets you choose specific tables to optimize rather than running the full Fix operation.
  • Reset Optimizer Files clears all optimizer data and forces a complete rebuild the next time a query runs. This is useful if the optimizer is behaving incorrectly, but it also requires re-optimizing all tables afterward.
