[QXL ALL] - Handling Special Characters (Backslash) During QXL MySQL Export

Problem Description:

When exporting data from QuickBooks to MySQL using QXL Desktop Pro Edition, inserts may fail for tables containing special characters (such as backslash \) - particularly the Invoice, CreditMemo, and similar tables. The error message indicates an inability to insert records.

Affected products: QXL Desktop Pro Edition, QuickBooks Desktop, MySQL
Expected outcome: After configuring the Special Characters escape mapping in QXL Pro Edition settings, data with special characters exports successfully to MySQL.

Symptoms:

  • QXL export succeeds for some tables but fails for others (commonly Invoice, CreditMemo).
  • Error: "Unable to insert records to destination - [TableName]".
  • The failure is caused by a special character (backslash or other) in the QuickBooks data that MySQL cannot process during the insert.

Cause:

QuickBooks customer notes and related fields may contain special characters like backslashes (\). When QXL exports this data directly to MySQL, the backslash is interpreted as a MySQL escape character, corrupting the INSERT statement and causing the row insert to fail. The fix is to configure QXL's built-in Special Characters escape mapping to translate these characters before insertion.

Environment:

ProductVersion / Detail
QXL Desktop Pro Edition All versions (special character feature available in Pro Edition)
MySQL All versions
QuickBooks Desktop All editions

Solution:

  1. Open QXL Settings (Options).
  2. Navigate to the Pro Edition tab.
  3. Configure Special Characters mapping:
    1. Find the Special Characters section.
    2. In the Escape Character List, enter the following:
      • Find field: \
      • Replace with field: \\
    3. Click Add Or Update.
  4. Enable the escape character functionality. Make sure the "Enable escape Character Functionality" checkbox is checked.
  5. Save and close. Click Save to persist the changes, then close QXL Settings.
  6. Re-run the export. The special characters will now be properly escaped during insertion into MySQL.

SQL Examples:

No direct SQL modifications are needed - the escape mapping is handled entirely by QXL's Pro Edition settings. After enabling, exports work normally:

-- Export works without modification after escaping is configured
SELECT * FROM Invoice

Example Scenarios:

Scenario 1 - Customer notes containing backslash in Invoice export:

A customer's QuickBooks invoice records include customer notes with backslash characters (e.g., file paths or typed entries like "C:\data"). When exporting to MySQL via QXL, the raw backslash caused INSERT failures. Configuring the Special Characters panel in QXL Pro Edition with \ → \\ resolved the issue.

Scenario 2 - CreditMemo table export failure:

A company's credit memo records contain special characters from customer correspondence. The same Special Characters configuration (Enable escape character + find/replace mapping) fixes all table exports, not just Invoice.

Additional Notes:

  • This is a QXL Pro Edition feature only. The Special Characters panel is available in QXL Desktop Pro Edition settings, not in the free edition.
  • The escape mapping applies to all tables exported after configuration. Once configured and saved, all subsequent exports from that QXL session will use the special character escaping rules.
  • Additional special characters can be mapped. If other special characters cause issues (e.g., ", ', %), they can each be added to the Escape Character List with their respective escape sequences.
  • This is distinct from SQL string escaping. The QXL Special Characters panel handles data-level escaping during export. It does not affect how you write SQL queries - that is a separate topic (use double-single-quote '' escaping for single quotes in standard SQL, NOT backslashes).
