[QODBC ALL] How to Disable QRemote Server Auto-Start on Windows Bootup

Problem Description:

QRemote Server automatically starts every time Windows boots up. You want to disable this behavior - either because it conflicts with another user's session on a multi-user server, causes startup errors, or you prefer to launch QRemote manually when needed.

Affected products: QRemote Server, Windows (all versions)
Expected outcome: QRemote Server no longer launches at Windows bootup; it can be started manually from its own application menu when needed.

Symptoms:

  • QRemote Server.exe starts automatically on Windows boot, even if you did not want it running.
  • Multiple users on the same machine experience QRemote conflicts because one user's instance blocks another.
  • An error appears when QRemote tries to auto-start without a logged-in QuickBooks session.
  • You want full manual control over when QRemote starts and stops.

Cause:

QRemote Server includes an option called "Start QRemote Server on system startup" that is enabled by default during installation. When this setting is active, QRemote runs as a background process every time the machine boots - regardless of whether a QuickBooks session is available.

Resolution:

  1. Open QRemote Server from your Start menu or system tray icon.
  2. Navigate to File → Settings.
  3. Switch to the Advanced tab.
  4. Uncheck "Start QRemote Server on system startup."
  5. Click OK to save the change.
  6. Optionally, stop the currently running QRemote instance: File → Quit or close from the system tray.

QRemote Server will now only run when you manually start it. You can re-enable auto-start at any time by reversing the steps above.

Additional Notes:

  • On multi-user servers or terminal sessions, QRemote running under a specific user's context may block other users from connecting. Disabling auto-start prevents this conflict.
  • If QuickBooks is not logged in at boot time, QRemote Server cannot initialize properly and may log errors. Disabling auto-start eliminates these unnecessary error messages.
  • For production use where QRemote should always be available, keeping the auto-start option enabled is recommended - ensure only one user has QuickBooks running on the machine.

Example Scenarios:

Scenario 1 - IT admin manages a multi-user QuickBooks server:

An IT admin noticed QRemote was launching on boot under a service account, preventing actual users from connecting. Disabling auto-start allowed each user to launch QRemote in their own session after logging in, resolving the conflict.
