[QODBC ALL] QODBC: Installing the Correct Build Version and Compatibility Notes

Problem Description:

QODBC is distributed in multiple build versions. Installing the latest or a different build than what third-party client applications expect can cause compatibility issues - including connection failures, empty datasets, and application crashes. It is important to ensure that the QODBC build version matches the requirements of any external tools, scripts, or client applications connecting through it.

Affected products: QODBC Desktop (all builds), QRemote Server/Client, third-party ODBC clients
Expected outcome: QODBC is installed at a build version compatible with all dependent applications; connections work as expected.

Symptoms:

  • After updating or reinstalling QODBC to the latest build, existing client applications can no longer connect to QuickBooks via QODBC.
  • The QRemote Test Tool connects successfully, but external scripts return empty datasets or connection errors.
  • QuickBooks launches unexpectedly when testing a QODBC connection (indicating a mismatch in how the driver communicates with QuickBooks).
  • A third-party application that previously worked with QODBC starts failing after a QODBC update.

Cause:

QODBC is updated periodically with new builds. Each build may change internal APIs, SDK bindings, or connection behavior. Third-party client applications built against a specific QODBC build (e.g., build 351) may stop working when the driver is updated to a newer build that has different internal interfaces or communication protocols.

This is not a bug in either QODBC or the third-party application - it is a version compatibility issue. The client expects a specific driver behavior that only exists in the build it was tested against.

Environment:

ProductVersion / Detail
QODBC Desktop All builds (e.g., 351, 352, 358, 359, etc.)
QRemote Server/Client All versions
QuickBooks Desktop All editions
Third-party Clients Any ODBC-dependent application (Excel, Access, SQL Server, custom scripts)

Solution:

Identify the Required Build Version

  1. Contact your third-party application vendor or IT team. Ask which QODBC build version their software was tested and certified against (e.g., "What QODBC build does this tool require?").
  2. Check documentation. Some applications explicitly document the required QODBC version in their setup guide or release notes.

Install the Correct Build

  1. Uninstall the current QODBC version. Go to Control Panel → Programs and Features → uninstall QODBC Driver for QuickBooks. Restart the machine.
  2. Download the required build. Contact QODBC Support or check the builds archive at https://qodbc.com/download/builds/ for the correct installer.
  3. Install and configure. Run the installer, then configure your DSN through the 32-Bit ODBC Administrator (Control Panel → Administrative Tools → Data Sources (ODBC) (32-bit)).
  4. Test the connection. Use the QODBC Test Tool to verify connectivity before running your third-party application.

Workaround: Multiple Builds on Separate Machines

If you need different QODBC builds for different purposes, consider:

  • VMs or separate machines: Install the latest QODBC on one machine for general use, and a specific older build on a dedicated VM for third-party applications that require it.
  • QRemote routing: Use QRemote to route connections from your application to a QODBC instance with the correct build. This way, only the server-side QODBC needs the specific build version; the client application connects via QRemote.

Example Scenarios:

Scenario 1 - Latest update breaks existing client:

A customer had a third-party reporting tool built against QODBC build 351. After reinstalling the latest QODBC, their connection failed and returned empty datasets. The vendor confirmed the tool requires build 351. Reverting to that build restored functionality.

Scenario 2 - Multi-VM environment:

A company runs four QuickBooks instances on separate VMs. Three VMs work fine with the latest QODBC, but the fourth had a client tool that broke after updating. They resolved this by keeping build 351 on the affected VM and using the latest build on the others.

Additional Notes:

  • Build numbers matter: QODBC version (e.g., v24) is not the same as the build number (e.g., 351). Both must match your application's requirements.
  • Always backup before updating: Before installing a new QODBC build, document your current DSN configurations and CDKEY for reference. If you need to downgrade, you will have these details available.
  • Contact support if unsure: If you cannot determine the required build version, contact QODBC Support with the name of your third-party application. They can help identify compatibility requirements.
  • QODBC v24 vs v23: QODBC v24 introduced a subscription licensing model that is not compatible with v23 CDKeys. See the Forward and Backward Compatibility FAQ for details.
