[QODBC ALL] QODBC: "Beta Expired" or Trial Error - How to Resolve
Problem Description:
You receive a "Beta Expired", "Trial Expired", or similar license error when attempting to connect from QODBC to QuickBooks. The issue typically occurs after the QODBC beta/trial build reaches its expiration date, even though the customer may have previously been using the driver successfully.
Affected products: QODBC Desktop (beta/trial builds), QuickBooks Desktop Expected outcome: The latest full version of QODBC is installed and activated, and connections to QuickBooks work normally again.
Symptoms:
- A "Beta Expired" or "Trial Expired" error appears when connecting to QuickBooks through QODBC.
- The connection worked previously but stopped after a date passes.
- The QODBC version is an older beta or evaluation build that has since expired.
Cause:
Beta or trial builds of QODBC include an expiration date. Once that date passes, the driver stops accepting connections and displays a "Beta Expired" or "Trial Expired" error - even if the CDKEY is valid.
This is not a licensing issue; it is an intentional build-level timeout on evaluation versions. The fix is to install the current full (released) version of QODBC.
Resolution:
- Download the latest full version of QODBC. Go to the official QODBC download page: https://qodbc.com/download/
- Run the installer and bypass the CDKEY prompt during installation. When prompted for a CDKey, skip/pause/bypass that step - do NOT enter your CDKEY yet. Complete the installation as-is.
- Reboot the machine.
- After reboot, activate from the QODBC Setup Screen. Open QODBC Setup Screen (Start → All Programs → QODBC Driver for QuickBooks → Configure 32-Bit QODBC Driver) → About tab → enter your CDKEY to activate.
Additional Notes:
- Bypassing CDKEY during install prevents conflicts. Entering a valid CDKEY during the installer will overwrite the trial with the expired beta build still attached. Skipping it and activating from the Setup Screen after reboot ensures the full version activates cleanly.
- If you renewed your license but are still seeing this error, it likely means you are still running an old beta/trial build rather than the full released version. Installing the latest build resolves this even if the CDKEY was renewed.
- Your CDKEY carries forward. If your existing QODBC Desktop subscription is active, the same CDKEY works for the full version - there is no need to purchase a new license just because the beta expired.
- Using sample company files during evaluation: The QODBC 30-day trial works with QuickBooks sample company files (shipped with QuickBooks by Intuit). If your trial expires but you need more time to evaluate, switching to a different sample company file will reset the trial period. Mark Kuznar confirmed this as a workaround for customers who want extended evaluation without purchasing.
