[QODBC-DESKTOP] QuickBooks SDK Application Permission Prompt - Inactive "Yes" Input Box

Problem Description:

When QODBC attempts to connect to a QuickBooks company file, the QuickBooks SDK displays an "Application Permission" pop-up dialog asking the user to authorize the connection. The input box where you are supposed to type "Yes" is grayed out and inactive - you cannot click into it or type anything.

Affected products: QODBC Desktop, QuickBooks Desktop (all editions)
Expected outcome: The Application Permission dialog allows entry of "Yes" to authorize the connection, and subsequent connections proceed without repeated prompts.

Symptoms:

  • A pop-up dialog titled "Application Permission" appears when QODBC connects to QuickBooks.
  • The dialog contains an input box asking you to type "Yes" to confirm the authorization, but it is grayed out and unresponsive.
  • Clicking on the input box does nothing - no cursor appears, and no text can be entered.
  • The connection attempt times out or fails because the SDK cannot proceed without confirmation.

Cause:

This is a QuickBooks SDK behavior, not a QODBC bug.

  1. The input box on the Application Permission dialog requires you to first click the hyperlinked text titled "Learn more about the permissions of applications that integrate with QuickBooks."
  2. Once that link is clicked, the SDK activates the input field, and it becomes responsive for typing "Yes".
  3. If you do not click this link first, the input box remains disabled by design - this is a known QuickBooks SDK quirk.
  4. After authorization, QuickBooks caches the permission for that application. You should not see this prompt again for the same QODBC driver and company file, unless you connect a new/different application to QuickBooks.

Environment:

ProductVersion / Detail
QODBC Desktop All versions connecting to QuickBooks Desktop via SDK
QuickBooks Desktop All editions - this is a QuickBooks SDK-level prompt, not a QODBC setting

Resolution:

  1. When the Application Permission pop-up appears, look for the blue hyperlinked text within the dialog that says: "Learn more about the permissions of applications that integrate with QuickBooks."
  2. Click that link first. This triggers the SDK to enable the input field.
  3. Type "Yes" into the now-active input box and click OK or Confirm to authorize the connection.
  4. The QODBC driver should now connect to the company file successfully, and you will not see this prompt again for subsequent connections from the same application.

Additional Notes:

  • This prompt only appears once per application. If it reappears repeatedly after initial authorization, check whether a different QODBC driver instance or another third-party application is also trying to connect to QuickBooks - each new application triggers the permission prompt again.
  • If you cleared browser cache or QuickBooks credentials, the SDK may forget cached permissions and re-prompt. Re-authorize as above.
  • A known connection-failure scenario: Some customers have reported that after setting up permissions correctly, QODBC still fails to connect (connection spins indefinitely). This can be caused by a bug in certain QODBC builds that was resolved in later versions. If the permission dialog shows the prompt repeatedly and connections fail even after authorization, try installing the latest version of QODBC. A crash report from this scenario was resolved in QODBC build v359 (released 2025-06); the workaround was to install build v357 or later.

Example Scenarios:

Scenario 1 - First-time QODBC setup with QuickBooks Enterprise:

A new QODBC installation attempts to connect to a QuickBooks company file for the first time. The Application Permission dialog appears with an inactive "Yes" input box. The user follows the resolution steps above: click "Learn more," type "Yes," and the connection succeeds. Future connections work automatically.

Scenario 2 - Repeated prompt after permissions set:

A company that had previously authorized QODBC starts seeing the permission dialog again after an IT team member ran a different third-party application against QuickBooks. Each new application triggers a fresh prompt. The user authorized each one, and connections resumed normally.
