Troubleshooting: MS SQL Reporting Services and QuickBooks

Problem Description

I am trying to deliver reports via Microsoft's SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services. I have a Windows 2003 server with QuickBooks 6 and the latest QODBC driver using DCOM. I repeatedly got this error: "QB Open Connection Failed. DCOM Instance Error= 8000401a" until I set the component services permissions correctly on the QBXML... DCOM config items.

Now, I no longer get the error. I can run the report in the MS Business Studio without problems (the information always works fine in the Business Studio). Still, it hangs with a generating report message when I run it through reporting services. This seems to turn reporting services, and QuickBooks and a reboot will clear everything so I can hang it again. The report is created in the business studio connecting directly to the QODBC driver. It only references one table, InvoiceLine, and works correctly from the business studio. When installed in the Reporting Services and run via a web interface, it used to fail on a DCOM permissions error. Now I get no mistake, but it hangs, waiting for the report to generate. I do not receive any errors.

I get these same results whether I connect locally or remotely to the IIS server. The server contains all the components, QuickBooks, SQL Server, Reporting Services, QODBC, and IIS.

Solutions

First, look at your configuration setup: How to create a Link Server with MS SQL 2005/2008 to see if the linked tables are working correctly with SQL Server 2005.

Then suggest you debug IIS first using qbcust.asp found in: How to see QuickBooks data in an Internet Explorer Browser using Windows XP
