The QODBC Driver for QuickBooks runs differently under Microsoft Vista/W7 than other versions of Windows because of its new strict security settings.

UAC (User Account Control): is a new technology in Windows Vista onwards to improve system security which asks all users permission to run programs and tasks under a standard account module. It can prevent the installation of programs without authentication and contain an un-appropriate system setup change from a regular user.

If a button is not available in QODBC, it means that you have forced Administrator rights. The setup must be run without "Run As Administrator," and UAC must be turned on to activate these buttons.

Follow below steps

Close QODBC Setup Screen, Close Data Source Administrator ( if Open).
Click Start -> All Programs -> QODBC Driver for use with QuickBooks -> QODBC Setup Screen.

If Test Connection is enabled: You can perform a test connection or can use QODBC Test Tool to perform a test connection.

Data Source Administrator ( which by default runs as "Run as Administrator")

If the above does not resolve the "Test Connection" Grayed out the issue, Please follow the steps.

With UAC off:

     (1) Login as Administrator

     (2) Start -> Control Panel -> User Account -> Open or Closen "User Account Control" (UAC) -> uncheck Using User Account Control(UAC) to protect your computer" -> restart the computer

     (3) Run "OQDBC Setup Screen," and you will see the following: (The "Test Connection to QuickBooks" button is gray and cannot be used.)

 With UAC on:

     (1) Login as Administrator.

     (2) Start -> Control Panel -> User Account -> Open or Close "User Account Control" (UAC) -> check "Using User Account Control(UAC) to protect your computer."

     (3) Run "OQDBC Setup Screen," and you will see the following: (The "Test Connection to QuickBooks" button is lighted)

If you can still not get the "Test Connection" Button enabled Close QODBC Setup Screen, Close Data Source Administrator ( if Open).

Click Start -> All Programs -> QODBC Driver for use with QuickBooks -> QODBC Setup Screen.

     (4) Click on the "Test Connection to QuickBooks" button and then make a certification for QODBC:

When the test connection succeeds, you can get data from QuickBooks.

If the button "Test Connection to QuickBooks" does not enable, You can still make a connection to QuickBooks even after setting the correct UAC.

Use QODBC Test Tool or any other application like MS Access, Excel, or your custom application and connect to the DSN; it should get connected ( even though "Test Connection to QuickBooks" is not enabled.

Vista and UAC If you are looking to dilbase UAC for certain applications in Windows Vista, then follow this guide, and once you are done, the UAC may not really be all that bugging as it used to be. First download and install Application Compatibility Toolkit. Find

Could Not Start QuickBooks :

I would suggest you to keep QuickBooks running, and try again.

I kindly suggest you to try Keeping QuickBooks running, logged in as Admin, single user mode.
Your QuickBooks file should be accessible and should not be in restricted folder.

Are you trying to run QODBC/QuickBooks in auto login? And is your machine having Terminal serviced/remote desktop enabled i.e. multiple user logging in to your machine using Remote desktop connection?"

If your Answer is No, Please make sure you are not running Your Application in evaluated user context , i.e. you should not run it as "Run as administrator" , Please share log files from QODBC Setup Screen -- Messages -- Review QODBC Messages & Review SDK Messages.

If your answer is yes, then I would like to inform you that QuickBooks SDK has a known limitation with this type of Environment setup and many time it cannot start the QuickBooks in background. (If more than one user is logged in to machine and QBW32.exe is running on more than one user account)

Workaround for the above issue.
1) Make sure you un-select the option of "Keep QuickBooks running for quick start-up" under QuickBooks -- Edit Preferences -- General.
Close all other QuickBooks instances of all other users and then try. (Please verify no instances are running of QBW32 under task manager --processes -- view all user processes)
OR
2) Keep QuickBooks running and try connectin1) Make sure you un-select the option of "Keep QuickBooks running for quick start-up" under QuickBooks -- Edit Preferences -- General.
Close all other QuickBooks instances of all other users and then try. (Please verify no instances are running of QBW32 under task manager --processes -- view all user processes)g.
OR
3) For QODBC 13.0.0.291 and upwards, under Advance tab, enable "Force Start QuickBooks", Make sure you un-select the option of "Keep QuickBooks running for quick start-up" under QuickBooks -- Edit Preferences -- General

If you are still facing issue, I kindly request you to create a support ticket and provided below listed files.

2) Screenshot of the issue you’re facing.
Log Files from
3) QODBC Setup Screen -- > Messages -- > Review QODBC Messages
